Reboot required (180 day uptime! oh well!) for new kernel, software updates,
security fixes, etc.
1:06AM up 180 days, 6:11, 6 users, load averages: 0.00, 0.15, 0.11
May require two reboots, since there's a few other fixes, expect about 20-35
minutes downtime in total.
UPDATE: Thu Oct 29 08:13:39 EDT 2009 -- reboots complete!

August 10, 2009 :

~20 minutes downtime while base system was being updated.

May 4, 2009 :

As of 9:30pm EST - all servers are moved to the new cabinet!
|
|
May 1, 2009 :
 |
In Preparation for the move, the server will have to be rebooted a couple times
for updates.
There should be one or two reboots today, and then the server move should take
place either Friday the 1st of May, or Monday the 4th of May (depends on a couple factors)
Total downtime during the server move should be less than 2 hours if all goes to plan.

April 15, 2009 :

Upcoming server move - we're moving to a new cabinet, which means
an hour or so downtime while moving equipment (we'll work to minimize
this as much as possible). This will involve at least one reboot, but
might be two depending how the move goes.
The server will get a software update during this time since it will have
to be rebooted anyways.
Please make sure that all your services and IRCd's are crontabbed!
More info soon as to the exact time of this server migration.
(to happen within the next couple weeks)

Update scripts and login info for new ssh port, double check 'motd' when logging in.

Currently operating on a nice new quad core server!

The "new server wait" has been longer than expected due to
some restructuring taking place in Zoidial! Needless to say,
the wait is over...
The good news is we're switching to the new server (a dual
opteron machine, which will be much faster than this backup
system - running on a p4!). This will get us off a server
that seems to want to reboot every couple weeks, what an
annoyance!
The bad news is the new dual opteron server has had some
funny reboots in the past, and may not be up to task, but
we'll find out soon enough! (It's been much more stable
lately since some bios updates...) we'll see!
The sugar on top of the bad news is that we've now got a
spare dual pIII 1.4ghz server that can take over for the dual
opteron in a pinch. At least the dual pIII server has been
mega-stable (as apposed to metastable...).
We'll also be adding a Linux shell system to the mix which
is on a totally different server. More info about this new
system soon. The plan will be all current users will get an
account on this other server as well, as a thank-you for
sticking around! More news within the week.

New server (to replace this one) has been installed late April, and is being set up
and tested properly to take over for this one seamlessly. New server should be
put into production before June 5th 2008 UPDATE: Missed this deadline! Sorry!.

Happy New Year!
Starting the new year off the wrong way, the server has been having a pretty rough time lately! The backup server this was hosted on decided that its raid card was going to go wild. Long hours spent trying to sort out that one! IRCdNetworks main system is now hosted on a temporary server, awaiting a new server arrival within a few weeks. Will be at least a dual core with 2+ gigs of memory just to make sure there's nothing slow about it!

Some server difficulties meant we had to jump to a backup server!
|
|
April 30, 2007 :
 |
Server should be running at normal load averages now, and everything should be quite a bit faster! The migration of some of the backup data hosted on this server went smoothly, and everything has been moved to the new system. This frees up A LOT of disk I/O and CPU for this server!

|
April 23, 2007 :

Server has been under a lot of extra stress lately due to hosting a few backup systems at the moment (until a new server is setup and tested). This caused a crash today when memory and swap usage skyrocketed, it took a little while to clear up the problem. In a few days everything should be back to normal (ie. minimal server usage, quick response times, etc).

New website is online! Nothing fancy, but A LOT easier to navigate and much more organized information.
|
|
March 18, 2007 :
 |
New vhosts are now available! Type 'vhosts' in your shell to see them.
Please make sure bots, ircd, services and other processes are bound to either your IP or one of these vhost IP's please!

After nearly 2 years of uptime, the main disk on the server decided its time was up!
We've replaced this drive, and now also have two backup disks on stand-by for this server.
We have also upgraded to FreeBSD 6.2 (this is huge), which means some IRCds, services, and other programs may need to be recompiled (sorry for the hassle!).
Server has been renamed to metastable.ircdnetworks.com (in honor if its recent crash)
shellsx.com and shellsx.zoidial.com links will still function
You may have to reinstall your crontabs - please check!
If you have any software you require, or we missed, or have trouble upgrading your services, please send us an email at support (at) zoidial.com

Reboot happened yesterday, 87 day uptime before the reboot.
UPDATES:
Entire system was just rebuilt, including all ports and third party software linked against a new libc as a security precaution to alleviate issues with the recent *BSD libc vu lnerability (FreeBSD-SA-03:08.realpath).
PLEASE NOTE!! If you are running any of the following items, please restart them! (this will ensure they don't use older libc code, and will be safe from potential attacks)
* BitchX
* Anything that links to TCL (ie. eggdrops)
* Possibly other programs that are statically linked and utilize the 'realpath()' call
If you are wondering about a certain program you are running, I suggest the following:
1) extract the source of program in question
2) run this command from source directory:
grep -r "realpath(" *
3) if you find any 'realpath' lines, you may want to recompile the program.

Reboot within the next few days for a new kernel and to fix a few outstanding issues. Total downtime should be a few minutes.
If you still haven't crontabbed your processes, why not? =)

About half the IP addresses on the system currently are without reverse DNS. This will be resolved throughout the next few weeks as they are updated to reflect new users and s ettings. If you are having an issue with your particular IP address or want it to reverse to something other than a default, please email support(at)zoidial.com and this will be taken care of.

July 4, 2003 :

Updates of pine, vim and a bunch of libraries. Nothing very major. A general audit of the system has taken place, more to be done over this weekend.

|
June 20, 2003 :
 |
Email on this server will be username@shellsx.zoidial.com from this point forward.
Mails to/from @shellsx.com accounts may still work for a little while (perhaps a few weeks) but will be phased out shortly and will cease to work.

POSSIBLE DNS OUTAGE during a shellsx domain name migration to different servers.
If a domain stops working, it is because the servers have been changed, and your uplink dns server has cached old results.
If you have problems with the *shellsx.com domains, please connect to: shellsx.zoidial.com
For those customers who got migrated to the Plesk webhosting machine, you can find help at http://www.zoidial.com/faq.html

Due to a disk failure this morning, the system had to be rebooted multiple times in order to retrieve data and migrate to a new disk. This caused about 6 hours of downtime, but the issue was resolved. This issue also resolved an outstanding issue with the failing disk (which was showing other odd signs of misconfiguration or driver problems for the past few months - but now is known to be caused by the disk deciding its time was up.)

ShellsX Internet Services has merged with Zoidial Incorporated to create a new hosting company that combines the skill and dedication of a number of already established entities. ShellsX is now known as the IRCd shell division of Zoidial Incorporated, and will be the hub for hosting Unix IRCd accounts. Zoidial Incorporated will be the main point of contact for all current customers, and will be the main hub for webhosting.
